International Friendship Day

International Friendship Day July 30th

A Silly Milly Friendship coming soon!

International Friendship Day is celebrated around the world on July 30th. The day encourages making friends with people of different cultures and backgrounds. It’s an excellent opportunity to form relationships built on mutual respect and understanding. There’s so much to learn outside of our usual circles.

President Woodrow Wilson said, “Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.” That sounds like a true statement to me.

What makes a solid friendship? A friendship isn’t to be confused with an acquaintance. We all have acquaintances that are fun to be around, but a true friend is different; it’s deeper.

Here are some characteristics of a solid friendship:

  • Trust: Trust is the foundation of any strong friendship. It involves being reliable, honest, and keeping each other's secrets.

  • Communication: Good communication is key to understanding each other's needs, feelings, and concerns. It involves active listening, expressing oneself clearly, and resolving conflicts effectively.

  • Support: Friends should be there for each other through thick and thin. Offering emotional support, lending a helping hand, and celebrating each other's successes are all essential aspects of friendship.

  • Respect: Respecting each other's boundaries, opinions, and differences is crucial. It involves treating each other with kindness, empathy, and understanding.

  • Shared interests: Having common interests and activities can strengthen the bond between friends. It provides opportunities for shared experiences, creating memories, and enjoying each other's company.

  • Loyalty: Loyalty means standing by your friend's side, even during challenging times. It involves being there for them, defending their reputation, and keeping their best interests at heart.

  • Fun and laughter: Having fun together and sharing laughter is integral to any friendship. It helps create positive experiences and strengthens the connection between friends.

These are just a few examples; every friendship is unique. As a matter of fact, the next book in my Silly Milly the Dane Collection explores Milly’s friendship with a sweet little mixed breed named Leo. Even though they grew up in very different households, Milly and Leo met and formed an incredible bond - much like their humans. Their canine closeness has the same characteristics as our own friendships. With my signature limericks, along with fabulous art by Ilona Stuijt, Milly’s next book will help children worldwide understand the importance of being a true friend. And that’s definitely worth celebrating!
