Christmas in July? Why, Oh, Why?

Read about how Christmas in July came to be!

As July ramps up, many folks are celebrating Christmas in July! Do you know the origin of Christmas in July? Is there a reason a specific, very famous hobby store with a rhyming name has many of its holiday decorations, trimmings, and more already on display? It’s not just craft stores; other retailers all lobby their customers to partake in shopping for the upcoming season.  Is it just marketing and money-making that drive that “jingle bells in July” train?

Well, not exactly. I understand that many of our neighbors south of the Equator celebrate the season of giving during our summer. July is typically their most wintery month. That’s hard to believe as I type in my air-conditioned office, as it’s 100-plus degrees in Texas. Since Christmas is synonymous with the season of giving, Christmas in July seems to be a good name for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere.

Possibly. I also read on Real Simple’s website that Christmas in July was celebrated for the first time at Keystone Camp, Brevard, North Carolina in 1933. They did all the usual December doings: a decorated tree, gifts, Santa Claus, and even fake cotton snow. I feel certain that those camp counselors were on the nice list!

Perhaps. It was also mentioned that a movie from 1940 titled, you guessed it, Christmas in July might be the reason for the season in the summer. The main character spreads generosity and good cheer after he thinks he’s come into a large amount of dough, not sugar cookie dough, but the monetary kind. There is a more recent Christmas in July movie, too. This one has an actual holiday theme. And if that’s not enough, the Hallmark Channel has its own Christmas in July movie lineup. There’s still time to catch some of them if you haven’t already!

Nevertheless, however you believe, retailers decided to toy with this concept, and of course, Christmas in July is a thing, with sales, and deals, and savings, oh my!

But wait! What if you could get free stuff for Christmas in July? That’s right, FREE stuff!
